On March 23-24, BRMi’s Rick Nickerson and Tom Boudreau showcased BRMi’s solution for “Streamlining IT Governance at U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS)” at the Troux Worldwide conference in Austin, TX. BRMi’s work with the USCIS Enterprise Architecture (EA) branch stood out at the conference because it uniquely applied an innovative EA solution to the federal space. BRMi succeeded in building an Enterprise Architecture Repository utilizing Troux’s industry-leading strategic Information Technology (IT) planning software and repository platform.
Other conference speakers included architects, CIOs, CTOs, and business leaders from powerhouse commercial enterprises such as Volkswagen, Dell, CISCO, BAE Systems, Boeing, Oracle, and Microsoft. By giving a presentation alongside these speakers, BRMi continues to make an ever-increasing impression on the Enterprise Architecture (EA) and strategic modeling community.
BRMi’s Senior Director Rick Nickerson observed, “The overall theme of many speakers was that more and more EA implementations are no longer about hit-and-miss IT quick wins, but are steadily evolving in the direction of business drivers. As the speaker from Volkswagen emphasized, the trend in industry is to look for just the right amount of EA at just the right time. More and more content owners need to manage their own data through customized tools that break down large problems into solvable chunks. To be successful and prove value in a tough business climate, the EA maturity level has to be just right both for the EA team as well as the organization.”
Nickerson added, “It was gratifying to hear directly from attendees who came up to share that BRMi is being appreciated for innovating such solutions in the federal space.”
Mike Battle: “A terrific opportunity for BRMi”
BRMi’s President Mike Battle who also attended the conference, commented, “The conference was a terrific opportunity for BRMi to demonstrate its unique approaches to leveraging Troux to support the strategic intent of organizations. BRMi’s presentation focused on its development of an EA Repository for the USCIS EA group. It described how an intelligently designed and easy-to-use interface puts three important goals into focus:
- How to support a Federal EA organization to break the cycle of increasing governance burden by allowing content owners to manage their own data
- How to help educate stakeholders into understanding the full scope of governance
- How to achieve process improvement and reengineering up front so that EA design organically grows out of a culture where best practices and business improvements are valued and not just stacked on top of pre-existing problems

- Finance: ANZ, Discover, Fidelity, State Farm, USAA
- Government: DOI, Census, EPA, USAF
- Manufacturing: Alstom, Boeing
- Healthcare: Bayer, Kaiser, Merck
- Energy: CPS, Vattenfall
- Retail/Entertainment: CVS, Disney, Warner Bothers
- Technology: AMD, Cisco, Dell
Nickerson concluded, “This was one of the best conferences I ever attended. It was very stimulating to hear how similar the fundamental EA struggles and solutions can be in many different types of organizations – from industry titans to federal agencies. There were a lot a good lessons learned.”
